Hastings

The coastal resort of Hastings is the lively, cosmopolitan capital town of 1066 Country.

Fishing Boat at Hastings Old Town

Before tourism became the town's major industry, Hastings was renowned for its fishing. Now in the present day, Hastings is home to Europe's largest beach-launched fishing fleet. So, when you visit Hastings, make sure you explore The Stade, at the East end of the Old Town, where you will be able to see the fishing boats and witness the catch-of-the-day at the fish markets. Whilst there, why not enjoy a traditional sea-side fish and chip lunch?

The cliffs and areas surrounding the fish markets are full of history, landmarks and attractions. From modern-day visitor attractions like the Blue Reef Aquarium to historical features such as Hastings Castle; Britain's first Norman fort, and Smugglers Adventure on the West Hill, which take you back in time to the 18th Century. But, the best feature of that area, and indeed Hastings, is the Old Town itself.

Hastings Old Town is the elegant, charming area of Hastings. When you walk along the narrow streets of the Old Town, you get a real sense of the town's history, with architecture dating back beyond the era of smuggling to the medieval times. Indeed, there are many parts of the Old Town that are said to be home to ghosts from Hastings' smuggling past. With some wonderful independent shops and fantastic bistros and restaurants, it is well worth spending time there. At various points of the year, exciting, colourful events are held in the Old Town. These include Hastings Old Town Week, Jack in the Green (morris dancing), the very-popular Seafood and Wine Festival and Hastings Bonfire Celebrations.

Hastings Pier

On the seafront side of the Old Town, you will find a miniature railway, amusement arcades and fairground rides for the children and as you walk West from that area you will see another of the major landmarks of the town; the pier. Though no longer in use, due to structural problems, the pier does make for a spectacular scene when the sun sets in the distance.

Moving inland from the seafront, the town centre offers all the major high-street shops plus a great range of wine bars and bistros. For evening entertainment, you have the Odeon Cinema and the White Rock Theatre nearby.

Hastings is an amazing mix of hold and new and is well worth visiting during your time in 1066 Country.
